Gifts for Your Home’s Exterior for the Holidays

It’s that time of year again; the family is coming for the holidays and you want your home’s exterior to look its best for the holidays.

Between the stores filled with shoppers, the kids writing to Santa, and filling the home with the smell of fresh pine mixed with fresh baked cookies, you will undoubtedly find time to decorate your exterior.  And when you do, know that decorating your home exterior for the holidays is a great time to inspect your home for needed exterior improvements.

Although people don’t always think of it, winter can be one of the best times to make exterior home improvements.  While frigid temperatures and inclement weather can sideline an exterior project, contractors take advantage of any winter day that crews can work.  Winter months are typically the slow season when you are likely to get the best deal for your home’s exterior improvements.  When contractors are slow, so are suppliers so pricing for building supplies is discounted.  Another positive in making winter home improvements is scheduling.  Unlike the rest of the year when contractors are fully booked, they are waiting to schedule jobs in the winter.

The most efficient way to check for exterior home improvements is doing it while you are decorating.  Whether you are hanging a wreath or stringing lights, you are likely to get a good look at your home’s exterior.

  • Roof
While you’re stringing those lights along the roofline, look for signs of rotting or missing shingles or anything else that seems amiss. A damaged roof can lead to bigger problems on the interior including mold, pests, leakage, ruined treasures, etc.
  • Siding
Look for cracks, peeling, fading, general wear and tear on your home’s siding as you set lights alongside the exterior landscape or position figures on the lawn. New siding can enhance your home’s curb appeal and refresh the look of the exterior especially under the glow of Christmas lights.
  • Door
The door is the gateway to your home and essential to the safety of your family. Examine the door for a good fit. Check for cracks and the ease of opening/closing and locking/unlocking. It may be time for a replacements or repair.
  • Gutters
Inspect your gutters. Are they clogged?  If there is blockage in the drain, it could lead to ice dams.  Before the first snow falls, it is important to clean out your gutters. This will prevent the possibility of a roof collapse among other dangers.
  •  Windows
Look for signs of window damage, such as cracks, fogging, drafts, etc. Compromised windows can lead to mold, water damage, and higher energy bills. The windows keep us protected from the elements, make sure they stay that way.

There are several home exterior projects that can be tackled in winter, but whatever project you choose, Pro-Homes Services can help. Whether it’s winter, spring, summer, or fall, give them a call at 630-790-0800. Happy decorating!
